The Southern Railway Queen Mary Brake Vans were built at Ashford Works in the early 1930's to be used on the SR's fast fitted goods train which the already existing 4 wheel brake vans were not suitable for due to their rough riding at higher speeds and lack of vacuum fitting. They were built on a heavy-duty variant of the SR's standard carriage bogie.
Following the slow decrease of goods traffic in British Railways days the need for these larger brake vans decreased with most of them being relegated to departmental use. In this role a few brake vans survived all the way through BR days with a few members making it into the Privatisation Era with brake vans being seen in use on departmental trains even in the early 2000's.
These wagons have now all but been eliminated from the British Network, however many examples survive on heritage railways including the Severn Valley Railway, Bluebell Railway and the Swanage Railway.
